MONITORING & EVALUATION
Training
• Detailed application forms are completed by every prospective resilience builder
• Attendance register
• A daily record of activities covered is kept
• Strengths & weaknesses observed in the program are noted
• Group dynamics are assessed daily and issues are addressed with the group or with individuals as necessary
“Talking stick”
• At least once a day (usually twice) participants are given an opportunity to talk about how the training is impacting them
• Issues are addressed by the trainers
• Themes are noted and captured for a report
• Informal assessment of theory covered is done throughout the training
Evaluation forms
• At the end of training each participant completes a pro-forma evaluation of the training
• Data is recorded and submitted as part of the training report
• Themes are noted and adjustments, where necessary, are made for the next training
Journals
• Every participant must keep a daily journal
• These journals are submitted for evaluation at the end of the week
• Journals are assessed and a response is written to each participant
• These journals give a deeper insight into the participants own psycho-social needs
• Photographs are taken throughout the week
Camp
• Detailed application forms are completed by each potential camper
• Register of attendance
• “Talking stick”
• Each camper is given an opportunity at least once a day within their small group to talk about how the camp is impacting them
• Small group leaders note themes & issues which are then reported to the camp trainers and addressed accordingly
• The active participation of each camper is monitored by small group leaders
• Evaluation
• At the end of camp an informal “thumbs up/thumbs down” assessment of camp is done with the whole group
• Small groups discuss what was good / bad, what can be improved etc and the information is noted by small group leaders and fed back to the camp trainers
Practical
• The attendance at & participation in Holiday Clubs & Kids Clubs is monitored
• How well resilience builders use the skills & techniques taught and modelled in the theoretical training and as the practical training unfolds is evaluated
• The response of resilience builders to ongoing input is evaluated
• The response of the children to each resilience builder at the kids clubs as well as outside in the community is monitored
Kids Clubs
Kids
• Invitations (with forms for parents to complete) are issued (initially approximately 300) the details of each child and his/her circumstances are recorded.
• Details of children who join the clubs after initial invitation are collected and recorded too.
• Registers of attendance are kept
• How many kids are attending
• How frequently are kids returning
• The number of new children are joining the clubs is recorded
• Resilience builder trainers informally monitor and assess each group of children during the various activities
Resilience Builders
• De-brief & evaluation after each event
• Resilience builders & “support staff” are given an opportunity to talk about their experience of the day
• An informal assessment of what works/doesn’t work, what should be changed etc is done
• Resilience builders are assessed to establish if / when they are ready to begin support groups
Support team
• Are new adults / youth being drawn into the project?
• What is their suitability for training?
Support Groups
• Attendance registers are kept
• The frequency and number of children attending is monitored
• A record of expenditure is kept
• The nature of the activities & themes covered each week are assessed
• The impact of attendance on the general resilience of the child over a period of time is monitored
Coaching & Mentoring
• Attendance at & participation in these meetings is monitored
• “Talking stick” is used to continually assess the resilience of each resilience builder
Local Management
• Has a workable structure been established?
• Is it working?
TIME LINE
Obviously this will vary from community to community. We can only go as fast as the people in the community are able. To rush things impacts the long-term sustainability of the project and, hence, its effectiveness in building resilient children.
