MODEL
Identify
• Community
• Adults for training
• The nature of the training means that the ideal number of participants is 12 - 15
• Youth for training
• The adults help identify suitable youth
• The nature of the training means that the ideal number of youth on camp is 40 - 50
• Children
• The adults & the youth help identify children (approx. 300) for clubs
• During the process the most vulnerable children are identified for support groups (approx 120)
• Partner churches / businesses / organisations outside the community
• It is important when beginning this process in a new community that a partner church (organisation) is involved from the outset
• Partnerships with businesses & other organisations tend to grow with the work
• Partner churches / businesses / organisations within the community
• These partnerships tend to grow as the kids clubs become established
• These partnerships provide an increasing network of support for the children’s needs
Initial Training (Resilience Building)
Adults
• 5 day Introduction to Psycho-social Support for OVC
• The training model is highly experiential. We use a show / do model.
• We begin to work on building the resilience of the participants, many of whom were orphans & vulnerable children themselves
Youth
• 3 day residential leadership camp
• The training is highly experiential
• We work with the psycho-social needs of the youth who are often orphaned or vulnerable
Practical training (Kids Clubs)
Holiday Club
• 5 days of activities for approx. 300 children
• Led by Resilience Builder Trainers to model the methods covered in the theoretical training
• Adult & youth Resilience builders work in pairs with groups of 10 – 12 children
Kids Clubs
• Monthly Saturday events for approx. 300 children
• Over a period of 6 months the planning & running of these events is handed over to community resilience builders
2nd Level Training (Support Groups)
• Training in the establishment & running of weekly support groups for OVC
Establish Support Groups
• Having identified the most vulnerable children and trained competent adults support groups are established
• After about 3 months training about half of the adults will be ready to run weekly support groups impacting 80 – 120 children
• As soon as adults become ready to run these groups new groups are begun
Coaching & Mentoring
• From the end of the initial training regular (initially weekly) meetings are held to support the resilience builders own psycho-social needs
• Meetings involving trained adults & youth from the community and other volunteers from partner churches and/or within the community are held to build relationships & foster reconciliation
• Once Kids Clubs have begun other meetings are held to focus on the planning & running of these events
Establishing Local Management Structures
• For effectiveness & sustainability it is vital that local management structures are established
Continuing Cycle
• As the work grows and becomes established in a community new volunteers emerge.
• Initially these volunteers form part of a team of “support staff” for the resilience builders
• Suitable adults & youth for training are identified from this “support staff” and the cycle of training can begin again.
• Extra kids clubs & support groups can be established.
• More children are impacted & the community as a whole benefits
